1-1/3 yards of 60” wide cotton duck or lightweight canvas
for the outer case
1-1/3 yards of 60” lining fabric* or 2 yards of 45” fabric
Thread
1 yard fusible Velcro/hook and loop closure
Two 36” shoelaces
3 yards of strap webbing
Steam a Seam, fusible strips for placing pockets
Fray Check or clear nail polish
Optional: (1) Stiffener for the bottom of the case. Be aware
that this will make the case heavier and impossible to fold
when not in use. (2) Sheets of 1⁄4” foam to insert between
the lining and the outer fabric, rather than using any of the
padded fabric options. This foam needs to be glued (use
spray fabric adhesive) or tacked in place so it does not shift
between the layers of fabric.
*There are several options for lining and padding this case.
(1) Quilted cotton for lining and padding all in one. This is
probably the simplest option, also requiring the fewest advanced sewing skills. Be aware that quilted fabrics are usually
about 45” wide so purchase accordingly.
(2) Headliner is fabric backed lightweight foam that can
be used for lining and padding all in one. It is more than
60” wide and reasonably priced. It is not, however, widely
available.
(3) Light-weight lining fabric used with a product like
Pellon Flex-Foam 1-sided fusible stabilizer.
My sample case was constructed with quilted lining fabric and the Flex-
Foam and it was thick and tricky for my Bernina. Although it made a very well padded, sturdy case, I don’t recommend
this combination unless you are a very experienced sewer.
